The Sailing Hobo Story Begins

The Sailing Hobo story began long before I ever owned a yacht. It started with a love of adventure, the sea, and the feeling that there had to be more to life than simply following the usual path.

Every sailing journey has a beginning. Mine started long before I ever owned a yacht, with a love of adventure, the sea, and the idea that there had to be more to life than simply following the usual path.

In 2019, I stopped dreaming about that life and started living it. I sold up, bought HOBO, my Moody 376, and set off into a world I knew would challenge me, surprise me, and probably cost me more money than I ever planned.

Since then, the journey has taken me through Greece and the Greek Islands, Turkey, Sicily, Sardinia, Mallorca and along the coast of Spain to Gibraltar, with side trips to the UK and Morocco along the way. In between there have been plenty of long-haul flights back to Australia and fly-in fly-out work contracts in the oil and gas industry to earn the money to keep the adventure going. Now I’m doing a reconnaissance trip to Venezuela, exploring what might be possible for HOBO and where the next stage of the journey could lead. There have been wrong turns, breakdowns, unexpected adventures and unforgettable people throughout it all. Sailing has taught me that the best stories rarely come from everything going according to plan.

Sailing Hobo is where I’m going to tell those stories — the good days, the disasters, the places, the people and the lessons learned along the way. I’ll also share what I’ve learned about boats, gear and cruising, including the mistakes that cost me money so hopefully they don’t have to cost you money too.
