Health & Life Aboard

Health & Life Aboard

Life aboard a sailboat is about more than just where you sail. Staying healthy, keeping your energy up and looking after yourself becomes part of everyday life — especially when you spend long periods aboard and away from the usual conveniences of home.

One of the products I use personally aboard HOBO1 is LiveGood. I’ve found the range good value compared with many similar products, and I like that the products fit easily into life aboard without making things complicated.

Staying Healthy While Living Aboard

Living aboard a sailboat for long periods changes the way you think about health and everyday routines. At sea, you cannot simply pop down to the shops whenever you need something, and on longer passages you have to work with what you have aboard. For me, staying healthy is mostly about keeping things simple. Eating reasonably well, drinking enough water, getting proper rest when possible and making sure I have the basics aboard before leaving port all make a difference. Sailing can also be surprisingly physical. Handling lines, moving The other lesson I have learned is not to wait until something becomes a problem. Before a passage I check that I have enough food, drinking water and the everyday things I rely on aboard. Good preparation makes life much easier once the coastline disappears behind you. Life aboard a sailboat will never be as convenient as life ashore, but that is part of what I enjoy about it. You learn what you actually need, what you can do without and how important it is to look after yourself when the boat is your home and the sea is your backyard, around a boat in rough weather and spending long hours exposed to the sun and salt can take it out of you. Even something as simple as cramps can become a real nuisance when you are days away from land. You can read more about my sailing journey and how life aboard HOBO began on The Journey page.
